It is 1972. The Swinging Sixties designer and logo spotter Ian Logan is travelling through America on a personal mission. The flags of the mid-century railroad industry are falling one by one, but their insignia are still painted on locomotives and boxcars. Ian Logan is racing around with his camera to record a vanishing age.
Now, 50 years later, he has ransacked his collection of Kodachrome slides, magazines, timetables, matchbooks and other ephemera to create Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American Dream, co-written with the design commentator Jonathan Glancey and introduced by the architect Norman Foster. All three titans of design are passionate about American Mid-Century Modern. They will take you on a trip back in time.
