Boxcars roll across Salinas Valley at 5.30 a.m. on Christmas Day, 1972.

Roll the Clock Back

It was 5.30 on Christmas morning, 1972. Ian Logan was staying with friends in Salinas Valley, CA, and must have been woken by Santa Claus. He wandered outside and saw a line of boxcars rolling across the asparagus fields. This memorable shot is part of our Christmas Bundle. Sign up and roll the clock back!

It is 1972. The Swinging Sixties designer and logo spotter Ian Logan is travelling through America on a personal mission. The flags of the mid-century railroad industry are falling one by one, but their insignia are still painted on locomotives and boxcars. Ian Logan is racing around with his camera to record a vanishing age.

Now, 50 years later, he has ransacked his collection of Kodachrome slides, magazines, timetables, matchbooks and other ephemera to create Logomotive: Railroad Graphics and the American Dream, co-written with the design commentator Jonathan Glancey and introduced by the architect Norman Foster. All three titans of design are passionate about American Mid-Century Modern. They will take you on a trip back in time.

Ian Logan’s book Logomotive lies on an array of postcards created from period photographs and ephemera.
Both the book and the postcards draw from Ian Logan’s collection of Kodachrome slides and ephemera dating back to the 1970s.

Roll the clock back
Flip through the 400 colour images in Logomotive, including photographs, magazine and newspaper cuttings, letterheads, timetables, brochures, matchbooks, ashtrays, badges, posters, advertising hoardings and postcards, and you will be carried back to a world where trains dominated long-distance passenger transport. Steam or diesel, they offered levels of comfort and service unavailable today except on occasional heritage excursions.

Postcards are laid out on a table, with one selected for writing.
Step back in time. Write a postcard.

You can also enjoy the pleasures of an analogue world by writing and sending a postcard. Ian Logan has chosen 16 of his favourite railroad photographs and turned them into postcards that reproduce the style and typography of the originals in his collection. These are new designs using rare shots taken by him. Printed in small quantities and available only from our website, they are collector’s pieces recording scenes from 50 years ago. Delight your historian or railfan friends with an unexpected glimpse into the past. Roll the clock back now with our Christmas Bundle.
